Steam Powered Studio

I have been very busy in the studio this month, and so tonight I took off and went someplace else.

That's "me" in Second Life. I haven't learned how to do anything yet, but I did actually fly, and chat with a couple of newbies like myself. It was fun.

Don't let my appearance fool you- it's really me alright. Pretty buff, huh? Before I'm done though, I'm going to alter this to look like a dumpy, balding 60-something guy with bad skin. Just so I can say I actually look better IRL.

The name is the best part- sadly, you aren't allowed to create your own last name, you must pick from a list. I thought "Hoof" was the best.

So what's a studio without racks 'n racks of gear? A generous donor just contributed six channels of gates, two (possibly three) of graphic eq, two of 5 band parametric eq, a couple of CD recorders and a lunchbox. Oh, and some kind of switch thing that might come in handy someday.

Looks awesome, doesn't it? Kids these days use plug-ins to replicate most of these functions, and I haven't needed them much because my recorder has these things built in, but there is something sort of magic about patching up an insert and twisting knobs... this will be fun.

It's just something hanging around in a television studio, but I like it. Any idea who painted this?

An MP3 by Midnight production- this one with Summer Thieves, who you haven't been hearing much from lately. This is Joe singing, a song for his bro, one that Tom and I thought he'd written, but no, it's from a TV show. Still a pretty nice cover of a song some of us had never heard before...

Sometimes the session players need a little discipline.

street piano

This was my first encounter with one of the street pianos here in town. The Green Piano Blues.

R Bobby Trio

The Robert Bobby Trio was, or I should say, is, in town, because they are just starting their second set right about now at the Fulton Bar. Seems they have music Sunday nights, and permit smoking. Very interesting...

I suppose we'll call this an MPEG by Midnight production.

This is fun- a sample I recorded outside the Novelty Brush Company has been used as the soundtrack for a short animation by Blobby Barack. Check it out here.

This is a bit of studio chatter, taken while I was copying vocal parts from one track to another. How Maya and Oliver wrote a bridge.

I've posted a new rant to the Steam Powered blog.

I have a lot more to say about the nature of this studio and what I'm trying to accomplish here, but we'll just ease on into that later...

Meanwhile, back in the 70's, Ronnie Cook and his friends were sitting around in somebody's kitchen probably, recording themselves on some old tape machine.

When this fella spoke his introduction, could he have imagined that you'd be listening someday?

Maya and Oliver

Hmmm. We've had Maya and Oliver over here these past couple of days. I can't wait to post what they've been up to.
