Band names are funny things, and all this collecting links to bands in south-central PA has got me thinking about them. They're so hard to come up with that a google of "band name generator" just turned up over 200,000 hits.

But this is Pennsylvania, dammit, and you know what we do in Pennsylvania, right? We frack! I think I've come up with a way of fracking out a whole generation's worth of band names, and it was there waiting to be discovered the whole time- it's the prepositional phrase!

Here's an example- What Comes Next. The key thing to do when trying out a prepositional phrase as a band name is to say it as if you were at a mic introducing your band to the audience. So... "Hey everybody, we're What Comes Next!" (this band name works best at festivals, obviously).

Here's a few more- On the Floor. Out the Window. In the Air. Back In Time. And, for us older guys, Over The Hill.

But why stop with the prepositional phrase? Many other three-word phrases work too, such as Holding Down Jobs and Your Brother's Friends.

By now I'm sure you get the picture. Once you get started, you'll find that the English language contains something like 800 times as many band names as had been previously supposed. I feel Just Like Columbus.

I have compiled a list of solo artists and bands working and recording in South Central PA.

I've got 233 names on there. I'm sure I've missed plenty- let me know.

Be sure to visit their web sites and listen to their music. There is some really good stuff out there.

Here's a treat- Beccy Gildea, Jeff Hostetter, and Bruce Campbell performing her song for the Ranch for Kids documentary.

12 String in E

It's a catchy little number, and I'm sure there's a better title for it, but this gets us on the soundtrack!

OK, take a deep breath. Relax. The grown-ups will work to make sure that things don't get too far out of hand.

Whenever I feel that the forces of evil are about to destroy everything, I remember that they operate through imperfect beings called humans, and that humans (with a few notable exceptions) are incapable of being as evil as they'd like to be. In support of their sad, sorry ambitions, they come up with stuff like this- Nixon is Fixin'

Where there's a dope, there's hope!
