Conundrum

I wrote this one shortly after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. At that time I thought it was pretty hilarious that a major power could be defeated by a bunch of yokels. Come to think of it, it's still hilarious.

Back from the Borders

Back from the Borders 5/22/93

A thousand good soldiers in Retrograde square
Back from the borders
You're the commander, you've assembled them there
To hear your orders

Where will you lead them?
Where will you lead them?
Where will you lead them?
What world will you conquer?

Through all of their training, through all of their lives
They've been conditioned
To do without thinking whatever they're told
It's the tradition

Where will you lead them?
Where will you lead them?
Where will you lead them?
What world will you conquer?

But underneath your balcony
In the dark, hard to see
Agents of anarchy plant bombs
They undermine your authority
While throughout society
Your subjects question openly
What's going on?

So some you send packing and some you retrain
As secret policemen
Some you give medals and some will remain
Following phantoms

Thatís how you lead them
Thatís how you lead them
ĎCause that's how you need them
In this world that you conquer

Back in the barracks, drunk on again
A thousand good soldiers
Are on bread and water and don't understand
As they wonder

Where did you lead them?
Where did you lead them?
Where did you lead them?
What world did you conquer?
What world did you conquer?
What world did you conquer?
