tangerine and chrome

Linkin' Chain was one of the last things to come out of the studio in the basement on Maple Ave, at least, one of the last songs I had written there. It started as a lyric about someone I knew who was trying very hard to keep a doomed relationship going, and so was creating this strange world of beliefs to rationalise bad behavior. Like, really? Someone would do that?

As I was writing it I understood that it described all kinds of situations. In the early 2000's the upside-down political world we live in was just getting in gear. I mean, it had all been going along that way for decades but after 9/11 the shields came down and the lying was blatant. We mostly went right along with it, of course. USA!

So the lyrics of my song went from being about the personal to being about the social, and much to my surprise the idea is even more relevant now than it was in 2004. We might relate it to "cognitive dissonance" or "Trump Derangement Syndrome" but it's all the same pattern- creating these "links" between misunderstood events to create a strong defense of personal beliefs that MUST NOT BE QUESTIONED!!!

Enjoy it while you can.

Linkin' Chain

Linkin' Chain

Linkin' chain
Throwin' steel around your brain
Linkin' chain
To protect you from a pain
It may make sense to you
But all it is is linkin' chain

You can't see it, you can't feel it
You don't even know it's there
But it's as much a part of you
As an iron coat you wear
Now I'm tryin'
To break through
Now I'm tryin'
To get to you
'Cause you been cryin'
And it's true
It don't look good on you

Linkin' chain
Throwin' steel around your brain
Linkin' chain
To protect you from the pain
It may make sense to you
All it is is linkin' chain

You got reasons
Yeah plenty
To explain the way you been
But I think
It's too many
What keeps me out just keeps you in
Now I been tryin' the weak link
I been tryin' get you to think
Now that I got you on the brink
Can you hear those shackles chink?

Linkin' chain
Throwin' steel around your brain
Linkin' chain
To protect you from some pain
It may make sense to you
All it is is linkin' chain
