Here's a song from the viewpoint of a guy who has been sent up the river. All he asks is that it carry a message of the one he loves.

When I wrote this I was thinking of the Susquehanna- the river I grew up with, the one with a lot of old legends and lore attached to it. I imagine this story playing out sometime in the distant past, before it had been somewhat tamed.

The Term

Roll away, Susquehanna
On your way down to the sea
If you see my love on your travels
Won't you send a word to me?

I may not see my true love's face
There is a sentance over me
And I will serve my term in place
So won't you send a word to me?

Send it by the wings of sparrows
Send it by a blossoming tree
If you see my love on your travels
Won't you send a word to me?

Though there may be 500 miles
Between my love and me
They would be less than fleeting shadows
If you send word to me

Send a sign if you should pass her
Send a dream that I were free
Don't let the wind be your only answer
Won't you send word to me?

Roll away, Susquehanna
On your way down to the sea
If you see my love on your travels
Won't you send a word to me?
